Through my many years of teaching, my students have seen much success through graded examinations, festival/competitions and entry into specialist music schools and courses. Those who I have taught from beginner level have seen and continue to see rapid progress and extremely positive exam records. Some have reached the more advanced grades in just a few years, and my more advanced students have been or are working towards Diplomas and taking their studies into higher education. I am very creative and flexible in my teaching methods. Every individual is different, and I understand how to adapt and tailor my lessons towards their respective learning needs.
Ethos
As a piano teacher, I am first and foremost very supportive and positive towards my students. Whether you are looking for lessons for yourself or for someone else like your children, it is important that my students are enjoying their studies while also progressing. Through my lessons, I will help you build strong musicality, technique, and develop a real love for music. My lessons will provide you with lifelong musical skills that can be enjoyed at your leisure or professionally.
I believe that learning piano does not only develop performance prowess and personal expression, but is also drives your creative and intellectual growth. Skills gained from learning an instrument will help develop other life skills such as, discipline, patience, sense of achievement, self-confidence and more.
About Me
Joshua Cheng, DipABRSM, BMus (Hons), MMus
I was born in Winchester where I started learning the Piano at the age of 7. I eventually went on to study music at college where I had much success in piano competitions and festivals. Taking my studies further, I completed my Diploma in Piano Performance (DipABRSM) before moving onto higher education where I completed Bachelors and Masters degrees at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) respectively.
During my time at RWCMD and RBC, I studied with many renown pianists such as Richard Ormrod and Julian Jacobson. The former a graduate of Moscow Conservatory and the later graduating from the Royal College of Music. I played in numerous concerts, recitals and competitions, and attended/played in masterclasses given by renown artists such as: Angela Hewitt, Imogen Cooper, Stephen Hough, the Labéque sisters, Freddy Kempf, Steven Kovacevich, Roman Rabinovic, Peter Donahoe and many more.
Much of my own teaching has been influenced by the opportunities to learn from such great pianists and teachers. I believe that advanced techniques used at such levels can be adapted and applied to all my students, regardless of age and musical/technical ability.
I focused heavily on piano pedagogy (teaching) while completing my degrees. Numerous teaching modules were taken, with one being the equivalent to an ABRSM Teaching Diploma. I also visited schools to observe and assist in teaching one to one and group piano lessons. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to learn from giants of the piano pedagogy field such as Paul Harris and others.
After my studies, I have gone onto teaching piano full time privately and at teaching academies. I am also a visiting music teacher at King Edwards Preparatory School (KES Prep). Alongside piano teaching, I teach music theory in preparation towards ABRSM grade 5 theory exams, and provide piano accompaniment for graded exams.
